BEST OF BRIGHTON BROUGHT TO LIFE IN ART COMPETITION

On Thursday 16th September Book House illustrator, and author of popular drawing series How To Draw, Mark Bergin popped around the corner to the Jubilee Library in Brighton to judge the library’s fun ‘Best of Brighton’ art competition.

The task was to draw or paint your favourite important Brighton building. Entries were open to anyone up to the age of 19. Prizes donated by Book House included Mark’s titles How to Draw Dragons, How to Draw The Human Figure, How to Draw Portraits, Faces and Heads and popular Cherished Library title Brighton, A Very Peculiar History. The artist with the best picture in each category also has the pride of having their drawing emblazoned on the backs of all new Brighton libraries membership cards.

With so much talent emerging across the four age categories (Under 5 / 5-7 / 8-12 / 13-19), it was a difficult thing to judge, but here are Mark’s pick of the best:

UNDER 5s CATEGORY: WINNER - JAMES CAMERON, AGE 4. SUBJECT: Space Library

5-7 CATEGORY: WINNER - GEORGE HENDERSON, AGE 5. SUBJECT: Beach huts.

8-12 CATEGORY: WINNER - CIARA WHELEN, AGE 9. SUBJECT: Brighton Pavilion

13-19 CATEGORY: WINNER - WILLIAM PAGE, AGE 14. SUBJECT: Brighton Clock Tower

And here are the winning pictures together:

Congratulations to the winners and many thanks to all who sent their entries in. If you want tips on developing your drawing skills and learning new techniques, check out the ever-expanding range of How to Draw titles by following this link:

Our thanks go out to Brighton and Hove libraries for asking Mark to judge the competition, to Mark for casting his expert eye over such promising talent, and of course to everyone who submitted their drawing to the competition.
