“I wish there were more books about fishing like this one – by turns witty, anarchic, informative and fun, but mostly completely barking … worth buying as a bog book … as good inside as it looks from the outside.”

To discover more books by Jim, click on the picture to be taken to our online shop.

Favourite colour?
Yellow.

Do you listen to anything when working?
All the time – music without words when I need to concentrate, like jazz or classical, funky stuff when things are going well, and VERY LOUD rock when I’m doing something boring on the computer.

Person who had the most influence?
I had fantastic history teachers all the way through school. One of them, Mr Williams, was also very cool. He drove a giant motorcycle into school and we all called him Shakey Starlight, the name he used in his band, Rocket 88. Another one used to be in the army and was great at describing battles and all the bloody bits in history.

Who is your favourite author?
Roald Dahl wrote very funny books for children and adults.

If you weren’t an author, what would you be doing?
I would love to have been a musician… though it’s hard to make any money!

How do you do your research?
I read as many big books as I can on the subject and pick out the bits I find interesting.

When did you start writing?
About 15 years ago. I was a big fan of horror movies and the first book I wrote was about Dracula, investigating the facts behind the story.

Favourite film of all time?
Hard to say, but I’ve watched Strictly Ballroom more times than any other film – always makes me laugh, and one of the characters in it really reminds me of my dad!

What do you do in your free time?
I love watching movies, but I’m in several bands in Dublin so I spend most of my free time playing in late-night clubs or at weddings.

What do you do when you are stuck for inspiration?
I go for a walk. By the time I’m back at my desk I usually know what I’m going to do.

Favourite holiday destination?
Northern California. It’s got everything – these amazing giant trees, gorgeous beaches, wonderful skiing and delicious wines – and I’ve got some great friends living in San Francisco.

Who or what makes you laugh?
Really bad puns. My favourite joke goes: What’s orange and sounds like a parrot Answer: A carrot. I know, it’s terrible.

Your favourite guilty pleasure?
Chocolate – big bars of it!

Favourite book you have written?
Usually the book I’m working on – it’s exciting seeing it come together. When I look back at books I’ve finished, I always think I could have done them better!

What time of day are you most productive?
My biggest brainwaves come first thing in the morning, while I’m lying in bed hoping that I won’t have to get up.

How long does it take to write a book?
That would be telling!

Last book you read?
The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga. The main character is a nasty piece of work but it’s a great read.

Words to live by?
Enjoy your food!

Do you ever visit schools?
Sometimes I go to schools to organise photoshoots for a book.

Where do you work?
I have an office in an old building in Dublin that used to be a woollen mill. It has very high ceilings, so it’s freezing in winter and very hot in summer (so hot that sometimes I work in just my shorts and flip-flops). However, it’s got lots of space, so I have room for all my music gear and my bands can rehearse there at night when everyone in the offices nearby has gone home.

Jim has written many of our Peculiar History titles such as:

London, Ireland, The Tudors, World War One, World War Two, Titanic, Ancient Egypt and Cricket.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY QUEEN ELIZABETH II!

We’d like to say a huge congratulations to author and illustrator Carolyn Franklin for being nominated, alongside just three other authors, for the 2011 Educational Writers’ shortlist, organised by ALCS and the Society of Authors. About the book, published by Book House, the judges remarked:

“[It] looks and reads like a real journal with a great mix of informative text, sketches and photographs.”

We wish her the very best of luck at the awards ceremony (with drinks at the House of Commons!) on 6th December!

Find more information about the award on the Society of Authors website here.

Taking a look through the Gorilla Journal (sister title to Lion Journal, also penned by Carolyn), it’s easy to see why she was nominated. The book is a wonderful scrapbook of incredible close-up photographs and sketches that tell the story of a girl’s trip to the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, where she comes face-to-face with a variety of wildlife. Filled with animal facts, and with an environmental message, Gorilla Journal recounts the experience of a lifetime.

Buy Gorilla Journal (PB)

FROM THE DEEPEST, DARKEST DEPTHS OF BOOK HOUSE TOWERS, WE WISH...

FROM THE DEEPEST, DARKEST DEPTHS OF BOOK HOUSE TOWERS, WE WISH YOU A HORRIFICALLY HORRID HALLOWEEN!

Mwa ha ha ha! Who is your favourite author? Ooooooo, tricky. I think either Terry Pratchett or Bernard Cornwell right now, but this can vary.

2. Who is the person who has influenced you the most? My Grandmother.

3. If you weren’t an author, what would you be doing? Probably teaching history somewhere.

4. What is the biggest obstacle you face when writing? I never have enough time to achieve all that I want to do.

5. Do you listen to anything when working? Yes, I have the radio on turned down low – usually Classic FM

6. What is the best thing about being an author? Being able to research really interesting topics.

7. What’s your favourite book? I really enjoyed reading Pyramids by Terry Prachett, but I’m not sure I have a favourite as such.

8. What’s your favourite film? Gosh, so many to choose from. The Dambusters, Zulu, A Knight’s Tale, Waterloo, Angels One Five, A Matter of Life and Death, The Great Escape, The Searchers. I am a real boy when it comes to movies.

9. What’s your guiltiest pleasure? Cream teas

10. What do you do when you are stuck for inspiration? Get out a bill that needs paying and wonder how I am going to pay it.

11. What’s your favourite holiday destination? Italy, just love the place as a holiday place.

12. Who / what makes you laugh? Carry on movies - especially Up the Khyber.

13. Which of the books you have worked on is your favourite? I am not sure that I have a favourite. Oh, not true. Whichever one I am working on at the moment is my favourite.

14. What time of day are you most productive? Mornings.

15. Do you have a motto? If so, what is it? Never miss a deadline.

16. Where do you do most of your work? At my desk in my garden office.

17. What’s your proudest accomplishment? Workwise, I suppose having published the first book that was my concept from start to finish – England vs Scotland

18. What has been inspiring you lately? My father. He was in the RAF during the Battle of Britain and I have been doing some work on World War II recently.

19. Any advice for budding authors? Get all the experience you can wherever you can find it. Local newspapers are a good place to start.

20. What’s the one thing you would take to a desert island? An endless supply of soap. I hate being grubby.

Buy Wales, A Very Peculiar History

IN THE WRITER’S CHAIR – JACQUELINE MORLEYWe’re...

IN THE WRITER’S CHAIR – JACQUELINE MORLEY

We’re kickstarting regular blog feature ‘In The Writer’s Chair’, a series of interviews with Salariya authors, with Jacqueline Morley, author of the newly released addition to the Cherished Library canon, ‘William Shakespeare, A Very Peculiar History’.

1. Who is your favourite author? P.G. Wodehouse – his early period, when the dew was still on him. Pure poetry, every word a winner. Bertie Wooster is my favourite hero – he can make anyone feel they’re a genius.

2. Who is the person who has influenced you the most? My husband. He was an ideas man, though I wouldn’t let him dip the curtains in plaster of Paris to hang in swags on the outside of the house.

3. If you weren’t an author, what would you be doing? Having no other outstanding talents it’s difficult to say. In my ideal world I’d be a fantastically successful opera singer – I love the sound of applause!

4. What is the biggest obstacle you face when writing? Getting what needs to be said into the mean quota of words that illustrated books allow.

5. Do you listen to anything when working? My cat purring.

6. What is the best thing about being an author? True answer: It’s the only thing apart from teaching that anyone will pay me to do. Politically correct answer: I usually write ‘information’ books and I really enjoy the ‘finding out’ stage of the work. In fact it’s a treat to be asked to write on a subject I don’t know a lot about. I learn so much!

7. What’s your favourite book? Children’s book: Norman Lindsay’s The Magic Pudding – read it and you’ll see why. For adults: anything by Thomas Love Peacock – you may not see why.

8. What’s your favourite film? It has to be Ivan the Terrible, part 1. Sends shivers down my spine (It’s not a horror film!)

9. What’s your guiltiest pleasure? See my answer to Question 18.

10. What do you do when you are stuck for inspiration? Make myself a cup of coffee.

11. What’s your favourite holiday destination? Anywhere with good ruins - that mostly means North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean. I’ve still got South America to do.

12. Who / what makes you laugh? It’s almost always verbal humour, by which I mean puns, etc. And it’s true the best ones really are the worst. That’s why I’m such a fan of I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue. I’ve also just been given three DVD’s of Dad’s Army – I love it to death.

13. Which of the books you have worked on is your favourite? Across America with Lewis and Clark – a great story and I think we did it well.

14. What time of day are you most productive? Latish, though being at the computer after 11.45 pm makes my head suddenly feel funny.

15. Do you have a motto? If so, what is it? ‘I must go to bed earlier.’

16. Where do you do most of your work? At home, in libraries, or in book shops snooping.

17. What’s your proudest accomplishment? Three daughters, all clever and beautiful.

18. What’s the one thing you would take to a desert island? Coffee… No, whiskey… No, Toblerone!

You’ll soon be able to purchase Jacqueline’s books through the Salariya Online Shop, which will offer absolutely NO P&P for UK customers (!), but in the meantime you’ll find them wherever books are sold.

Buy William Shakespeare, A Very Peculiar History
